The needlework is a craft and to some people it is an art that makes the textile, decorative fabrics or other materials look exquisite and elegant. Specific feature of the needlework is that the stitches and the basic techniques have not changed over the years and the machine embroideries are now similar to the needlework seen thousands of years ago.

There might be some arguments about the origin of the needlework. Different types of needlework have survived from the Iron Age in Europe through the Ancient Egypt and the Chou Dynasty (1046-256 B.C.) in China.

The materials used in the needlework are diversified. In the past it has mostly been embroidered on wool, linen and silk. Nowadays, the embroideries are made both on the above mentioned textiles and on other materials (cotton, silk and other fabrics of synthetic origin).
